Study in Austria
Public universities, clear semester deadlines, and a growing number of English-taught programmes.
Overview
Austria's public universities are well regarded and many students apply for German-taught degrees, so language is the first question. A growing number of programmes are taught in English.
The OeAD, Austria's agency for education, does not process study applications. You apply to the institution.
Admission steps
- Find your programme and institution on Study in Austria.
- Contact the institution to confirm its requirements, including language.
- Find the application form on the institution's website and send it with all required documents. Most use online registration.
- Apply early. Reviewing foreign documents takes time.
- If your programme has an entrance exam, apply before its deadline. These can close up to 6 months before the semester.
Documents you usually need
- Passport copy
- Secondary school leaving certificate that qualifies you for university study (Bachelor's)
- Relevant Bachelor's degree of at least 6 semesters, 180 ECTS (Master's)
- German language proof for German-taught programmes
- Originals plus photocopies of foreign documents, legalised. Translations into languages other than German or English must also be legalised.
Visa and residence permit
- Check whether you need a visa or residence permit for your nationality, using the OeAD entry and residence page.
- Start about three months before your planned entry. Collecting documents can take time.
- Contact the Austrian authorities or the representation in Pakistan for the current document list and appointment steps.
Documents
- The official student page lists no fixed documents. Expect admission proof, passport, proof of funds and health insurance, and confirm the current list with the Austrian authorities.
Rules depend on nationality and change over time. Study in Austria and the OeAD point to official authorities for the final list.
