Two ways in

The next HEC call date is announced by HEC. Check the HEC page often, because the window can be short. Other Chinese scholarships (provincial, university, company) have their own calls and are listed by each university.

Documents you prepare
- CGS application form, completed online.
- Passport information page. It must be valid for at least 12 months from your planned start date, or be renewed before you apply.
- Highest degree certificate, notarised. Final-year students bring an expected graduation letter or enrolment certificate.
- Academic transcripts. If they are not in Chinese or English, add notarised translations.
- Language proof: HSK report for Chinese-taught programmes, or IELTS/TOEFL or the university's own proof for English-taught ones.
- Admission letter, pre-admission letter or supervisor's invitation letter for Master's and PhD.
- Study plan or research proposal, in Chinese or English. The guides we checked ask for at least 800 to 1,000 words for postgraduates, so follow the word count in your notice.
- Two recommendation letters from professors or associate professors.
- Foreigner Physical Examination Form if you will study more than six months. Complete it in English, with photo, cross-page seal and physician and hospital signature or seal. It is valid for six months.
- Certificate of no criminal record from the local public security authority, usually issued within six months of submission.
How the application runs
- Choose a university and programme and contact the university for its admission materials.
- Get the nomination or recommendation from the agency in your home country where your route needs it (Type A: HEC).
- Register and log in to the CGS information system at studyinchina.csc.edu.cn and submit the online application.
- Upload the documents the system asks for, then submit.
- Wait for the result from the scholarship authority and the university.
What the scholarship covers
According to the official guide, the Chinese Government Scholarship covers Chinese-language preparatory study (typically one year) where it applies, and degree study for the programme's standard duration. The exact funding standards for tuition, accommodation, stipend and insurance are published on the official Study in China site, so check them there for the current year before you plan your budget.
