Country guide
Study in China
Government and university scholarships, English-taught Master's and PhD programmes.
Overview
China offers government, provincial and university scholarships, and many universities teach Master's and PhD programmes in English. Pakistani students apply through each university and, for the Chinese Government Scholarship, through the official scholarship system.
Your visa depends on the admission notice and the JW form your university issues, so start with a confirmed offer.
Admission steps
- Choose programmes and universities on the official Study in China portal.
- Decide how you will fund your studies: Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC), provincial or university scholarship, or self-funded.
- Apply online to the university and, if you want CSC, through the scholarship application route. Windows open on set dates each year, so check the portal.
- Receive your admission notice and the Study in China Confirmation Form (JW201 or JW202) from the university.
- Apply for your X visa with the passport, admission letter and JW form.
- After arrival, the university guides you through the medical check and residence permit.
Documents you usually need
- Passport and recent photographs
- Highest degree certificate and transcripts, attested as required
- Study plan or research proposal (Master's and PhD)
- Recommendation letters (usually two for scholarships)
- Language proof (IELTS, HSK or other, depending on the programme)
- The exact list differs by university and scholarship. Use the one in your application.
X1 and X2 student visa
- Get the admission notice and JW201 or JW202 form from your university.
- Complete the online application and print it, together with the Study in China Confirmation Form.
- Book and attend the visa application at the Chinese Visa Application Service Centre. X visas need an in-person interview every time.
- Collect your passport. Check the visa type and entry rules before you fly.
Documents
- Passport valid for more than 6 months with at least one blank page, plus a copy of the information page
- Copy of both sides of your CNIC

- Copy of the admission letter
- Proof of scholarship or funds (the X2 page states US$2,500 per academic year or PKR equivalent)
Funding and scholarships
- Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC): apply through the official route and the university.
- Provincial and university scholarships: listed by each university.
- Check each offer for what it covers (tuition, accommodation, stipend) before accepting.
